Understand your funder's agreement with Wiley

Wiley has unique agreements with some funders so you can comply with open access policies when submitting and publishing in Wiley journals. For details about these agreements and arrangements please select your funder:

Association of Dutch Universities (VSNU) +

Gold Open Access

Beginning 4 March 2016, authors from an institution affiliated with the Association of Dutch Universities (VSNU) may publish primary research and review articles open access in any of Wiley's hybrid, OnlineOpen journals at no charge to the author.

To publish without having to pay additional article publication charges, the article's corresponding author must be from an eligible university and the article must have been accepted on or after 4 March 2016. (View eligible universities and journals)

For more information, visit the Agreement with the Association of Dutch Universities page.

Australian Research Council (ARC) and National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) +

Green open access

ARC and NHMRC funded authors may self-archive the accepted version of their article after a 12-month embargo period (starting with first publication online) in an open access institutional repository. If articles are made open access following payment of an article publication fee, it is not necessary to archive the accepted version of the article, but the metadata must be available in the institutional repository with a link to the final, published article on Wiley Online Library.

For more details please see the ARC Open Access Policy and NHMRC Policy on the Dissemination of Research Findings.

Austrian Science Fund (FWF) +

The FWF gives authors the freedom to choose between two gold open access options (where an article publication charge is paid) and one green open access option (where the final accepted version of an article is self-archived online).

See FWF's guidelines for more information. If you have any question concerning FWF's Open Access policy, please contact Dr Falk Reckling.

Gold open access

(1) Open access in a hybrid journal (Gold Open Access)

Most of Wiley's subscription journals* offer a gold open access option called OnlineOpen. Gold open access articles must be published under a Creative Commons Attribution license (CC BY). In addition, if the publications are in the life sciences (or related topics), Wiley will deposit the final, published version of the article to Europe PubMed Central on publication.

If OnlineOpen is chosen by FWF funded authors, publication costs are transferred by project holders to Wiley and then reimbursed by the FWF to the project holders, for details see Peer-Reviewed Publications.

(2) Open access in a fully open access journal (Gold Open Access)

All of Wiley's fully open access journals will publish articles funded by FWF under a Creative Commons Attribution license (CC BY). The article publication charges for Wiley Open Access Journals are paid directly by the FWF, with no charge payable by the author.

In addition, if the publications are in the life sciences (or related topics), Wiley will deposit the final, published version of the article to Europe PubMed Central on publication.

Green open access

(1) Self-archive (Green Open Access)

Authors may self-archive the accepted version of the article in any sustainable subject or institutional repository after a 12 month embargo period (starting with first publication online). If the publications are in the life sciences (or related topics), authors must archive the accepted version in Europe PubMed Central after the embargo period.

How to select your Funder

When signing your license agreement in Author Services, please select your mandated funder to ensure you are offered the appropriate license compliant with your funder's policy. Not indicating a funder with a license mandate during this process may require a resigning of the copyright or open access agreement at a later date to make the article compliant.

Society Exceptions

*A limited number of society-owned journals have opted out of these funder agreements. For more information see the OnlineOpen Without a Creative Commons License page.

The societies for which Wiley publishes may decide on a different policy. We will continue to brief societies on any discussions held regarding funder agreements and the processing of the articles, appropriate acknowledgements with citation and linking to the final published version on the publisher's site, and clear licensing terms and conditions for the use of material protected by copyright.
