The Home for Target Validation Papers
What is a Target Validation Paper?
Pharmacology Research & Perspectives (PR&P) has launched an efficient and timely means for researchers to publish clinical findings that show a putative drug target to be invalid.
Historically, such ‘negative’ findings have tended to remain unpublished, leaving others to repeat fruitless investigations. Journal referees often reject papers on the grounds that the findings are negative leaving no record of a study outcome that is actually important, since it allows the sector to focus elsewhere in the pursuit of new medicines. Fortunately, increasingly, disclosure of ‘negative’ findings at the clinical trial end of research is likely to become a requirement in most countries.
Failure in clinical ‘proof-of-concept’ studies is known to be a major factor contributing to high attrition rates in drug development, either from lack of efficacy or side-effects. These failures reflect the fact that preclinical ‘target validation’ studies do not always translate into man, where ultimate target validation must reside. Data from such clinical studies could therefore provide invaluable information on target validation.
Because we recognise that if projects are terminated it may be difficult to justify significant resource to write up the findings for publication, we encourage authors to use any resources that are available to compile a manuscript e.g. information from the Clinical Investigator’s Brochure. When preparing a manuscript we encourage authors to examine whether the findings reflect a failure of the compound, the study design or the molecular target (drug versus design versus concept).

About the Journal
Pharmacology Research & Perspectives is published by two of the world’s leading pharmacology societies – the American Society for Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET) and the British Pharmacological Society (BPS) in partnership with Wiley Open Access.
As part of its continuing commitment to the principles of transparency, BPS is a signatory of the AllTrials campaign which calls for all clinical trials to be registered and their outcomes to be reported.
All articles undergo rapid peer review (a minimum of 3 referees). Publication is ‘gold’ open access (articles immediately and freely available to read, download and share). Publication is fully compliant with all open access mandates, authors retain copyright and articles are published under a Creative Commons License.
To cover the cost of publishing, Pharmacology Research & Perspectives charges a publication fee ($2,500 / £1,625 / €1,900). For members of ASPET or BPS, the publication charge is discounted by 10%. Fee waiver is possible for articles deemed by the editors to be of high importance.
